Your Personal Guide to Surviving Coachella

Spring is here, and that means one thing to music and fashion lovers: it’s time for the annual Coachella festival!

In 2016, I was lucky enough to get the chance to experience Coachella in Indio, California. It was definitely one of the best times of my life. I could go on for hours about my experience but for now I’m just going to touch base on the essentials.

Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better place to “people watch” than this music festival. People come in from all over the world and are able to express themselves through their outfits. But how does a concert-goer pick out the perfect outfit for such a big event?

Even if you aren’t attending the festival, you should always try to keep up with the event through social media. What are the celebrities wearing and what are the latest trends? Getting inspiration through Coachella fashion can be fun and super easy.

Keep in mind Coachella is located in the desert (literally), so everyone is better off wearing an outfit in which they wouldn’t overheat. Keeping cool is key! One of the ways I kept cool was with a romper. These were one of the top trends for the 2016 and 2017 festivals. I recommend getting a lightweight romper that won’t stick to your body, especially if you’re the type of person who sweats easily. They’re pretty cute too, so its a win-win!

When it comes to the accessories, these are essential tools that can either make or break your outfit. As of 2017, flower crowns are officially dead. Barely anyone is wearing them at this point and, personally, I think they’re a little tacky and mainstream. There are so many other things you can do with your hair, like twisted space buns or fun braids!

Three accessories that I would recommend would be sunglasses, a camera, and a bag/backpack of some sort. A bag can come in so many different styles and you can find one to compliment your outfit. Plus, they are a necessary addition when you’re in the middle of a concert and don’t want be holding ten things in your hands.

On my second day at Coachella, I wore a black crop top and some loose shorts with a white short-sleeved vest that flowed. I tried to go for more of a bohemian style look, which is definitely a reoccurring theme every year. Big trends that haven’t seemed to go away are crop tops and cropped shirts in general. They can help you keep cool while still showing a little skin.

Personally, my style choices have only changed slightly from high school until now. Looking back at my Coachella experience, I wish I would have tried to put together more bold and exciting outfits. It is what it is, but I definitely got a lot of outfit inspirations from being there in person.

Coachella runs from Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 22. To see a full lineup of events and concerts, check out its website.
